SPE Professional Certification

PURPOSE

SPE Professional Certification provides an international benchmark of the capabilities and knowledge of a petroleum engineer.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Science or Technology
  2. 4 years of hands-on experience in the upstream oil and gas industry
  3. SPE member in good standing
  4. Peer references
  5. Satisfactory completion of a one-time comprehensive written examination (see below)
  6. Acceptance of SPE’s Guide to Professional Conduct
  7. Completion of 16 hours of continuing professional/technical education annually – to maintain certification

THE EXAM

  • 8-hour written, openbook exam; 2 sessions of 4 hours each before and after lunch
  • 100 multiple choice items scored at 1 point each (100% objective)
  • Exam will be offered at ROGC 2010 if there are enough candidates (20-40)

EXAM CONTENT 

Exam topics are based on the SPE Competency Matrix:

  • General Petroleum Engineering (20%)
  • Drilling Engineering (17%)
  • Production Engineering (26%)
  • Reservoir Engineering (28%)
  • Formation Evaluation (9%)

RECOMMENDED EXAM  STRATEGY 

  • Review SPE Competency Matrix
  • Download a Study Guide from SPE
  • Take a Review Course from SPE (offered in Moscow April 2010)
  • Study the areas covered by exam
  • Allocate about 1 hour/day to study – total 100 hours
  • Chose the books to bring into the exam and mark them.  You may bring unlimited number of books but no loose papers or sheets; 5-10 books should be enough
