(23 October 2007) -- The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has announced the opening of a new office in Moscow to enhance service to its members in Russia and develop technical programs for the domestic oil and gas sector. The office, which officially opened on October 1, is SPE's sixth worldwide office. "Russia is one of SPE’s fastest growing regions. We are very excited about opening the Moscow office to assist in membership development in this important region and to develop more SPE technical programs in Russia," said Lawrence Slade, director of SPE's Europe, Russia, and West Africa regional office, located in London, which oversees the Moscow operation. "We are especially pleased to have extremely knowledgeable Russian staff headed by Claudia Rodionova, our general manager for Russia." Iskander Diyashev of IRDC in Moscow, who serves on SPE's Board of Directors, added, "The opening of SPE's Moscow office illustrates global recognition of the importance of the Russian oil and natural gas industry. SPE provides access to technological advances from around the world and also provides an important opportunity to highlight the unique advances in technology that have been made by Russian engineers and scientists." In addition to providing membership support to SPE's six Russian professional sections and 11 university student chapters, the Moscow office will help develop SPE Applied Technology Workshops, which focus on the latest applications of relevant technology, illustrated with field case studies and examples. The office also will help support the 2008 SPE Russian Oil and Gas Technical Conference and Exhibition, scheduled for 28-30 October 2008 in Moscow. This is the second major international event for the upstream oil and gas exploration and production community organized in Moscow by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and Reed Spearhead Exhibition. The first conference was held in October 2006. In 2008, SPE will also provide four leading technical experts to speak to Russian sections as part of its popular Distinguished Lecturer program.
